The Hamptons Doc Fest returns this week in an expanded edition with 33 films screening over eight days.
The festival runs Thursday through Dec. 11 at the Sag Harbor Cinema, Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor and, for the first time, the newly opened Southampton Playhouse.
The festival’s opening night film is "Steal This Story, Please!," a portrait of Amy Goodman, the Bay Shore-born host of the independent news show "Democracy Now!" The festival’s closing night film, "Lost Wolves of Yellowstone," tells the story of Mollie Beattie, who as the first female director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fought to bring wolves back to Yellowstone National Park after a 50-year absence. The annual Pennebaker Career Achievement Award will be presented to Alan Berliner, whose most recent documentary, "Benita," about late New York City filmmaker Benita Raphan, screens Saturday.
Among the guests scheduled to appear are filmmakers Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus ("Cover-Up") and Zeitgeist Films co-founders Emily Russo and Nancy Gerstman ("Monk in Pieces").
Tickets for most screenings at the Hamptons Doc Fest are $17; a festival pass is available for $375. For tickets or more information, call 631-237-8055 or go to hamptonsdocfest.com.
