One Tony Award winner will be stepping in for another Tony winner at this year's Staller Center Gala.
The Stony Brook University performing arts center announced Thursday that Broadway legend Bernadette Peters will take the stage at its May 2 event after actor-singer Mandy Patinkin had to drop out due to a television commitment. Peters, 77, and Patinkin, 73, are old friends who famously starred together on Broadway in 1984 in the Stephen Sondheim musical "Sunday in the Park With George."
Tickets for the gala ($75-$250 show only; $750 for the concert, cocktail and sit-down dinner) can be reserved by calling 631-632-2787 or going to stallercenter.com/gala. Proceeds from the event will be used to benefit the theater and its programs.
Peters, who previously performed at Staller Center in 2008, will perform a number of songs from her stage career including those by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Sondheim and Jerry Herman, along with pop standards and stories.
Since making her Broadway professional stage debut at age 10 in City Center's "The Most Happy Fella" (1959), Peters went on to win two Tonys — for "Song and Dance" in 1986 and "Annie Get Your Gun" in 1999. Among the many other Broadway shows she has starred in are "George M!," "Into the Woods" (as the Witch), "Mack & Mabel" (as silent film star Mabel Normand) and revivals of "Gypsy" (as Mama Rose), "A Little Night Music," "Follies" and "Hello, Dolly!"
