Last spring came the arrival of "Stranger Things: The First Shadow" on Broadway, and now this summer will see the arrival of some even stranger things.
"Paranormal Activity: A New Story Live on Broadway" is set to move into the August Wilson Theatre for a 20-week run with previews beginning Aug. 14 ahead of its opening on Sept. 15, producers announced on Tuesday. Tickets are available at paranormalbroadway.com.
The eerie play is based on the "Paranormal Activity" franchise which began with the first film in 2007 about a suburban couple who encounter a demonic presence in their home.
The cheaply produced film went on to earn a worldwide gross just shy of $200 million according to BoxOfficeMojo.com and has spawned six sequels.
"That 'Paranormal Activity' has earned the chance to trouble the sleep of Broadway audiences, that they’ll be immersed in the waking nightmare we’ve had the privilege to make, is the stuff of dreams," playwright Levi Holloway said in a statement. "I offer it’s unlike anything else on the American stage right now; a work of horror, heart and absolute mischief borne from one of the most profound collaborations of my career."
The stage version of "Paranormal Activity" opened on London's West End in December for a three-month run, which was extended through April. It has since enjoyed successful runs in Chicago; Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; and San Francisco.
