Wantagh's Joe Vanella will compete on 'The Traitors' spinoff

A Long Islander will be one of the competitors on "The Traitors: New Blood," a new NBC spinoff of the mega-popular Peacock reality series, the network announced Wednesday.

He's Joe Vanella, of Wantagh, according to the network, which will launch a so-called "all-civilians" version of the Peacock series on Sept. 17, in a two-hour premiere.

NBC had released cast names earlier to Entertainment Weekly, which spoke with Vanella, who said "I’m from Long Island. We sniff out ... [nonsense] like nobody else. So it should be easy for me."

"Traitors," based in a Scottish castle with Alan Cumming as host, has been a hit for Peacock the past four seasons, but the NBC version will be a departure. The streaming series featured stars from reality franchises like "Real Housewives," "Big Brother," "The Bachelor," "Survivor" and Peacock's other unscripted hit, "Love Island." The 22 contestants on the NBC version have never before appeared on TV.

In each series, so-called "faithful" contestants attempt to find, then vote out, the so-called "traitors" who also attempt to eliminate the faithful. The winner takes home up to $250,000.

In his comments to "EW," Vanella, 44, said: "I’m a funeral director, so I’m used to having conversations in emotionally charged environments. There’s no more emotionally charged environment than this, so all these other contestants are coming in sort of blind. I’ve been dealing with this my whole career. Just navigating that sort of challenge and having a leg up on everybody else I think is a very big advantage."
