Thic Chic Thrift Boutique in St. James is more than just a new plus-size clothing store — it’s a space rooted in body positivity and empowerment.

"I really just want everyone to feel comfortable in their own skin, cared for and confident," says owner Happie Pomisel, 51. "I’m a plus-size girl myself."

That personal experience shapes everything about her boutique. Pomisel knows the challenge of finding clothes that fit well and flatter, so she carefully hand-selects each gently used item with an eye for quality and style — and with the aim of making shopping a joyful experience.

"All the items are either brand new or gently worn — some have never even been worn," she says. "I don’t carry anything smaller than an extra large or women’s size 14."

She also adds that there's a small section for big and tall men.

Originally from Old Bethpage, Pomisel is married with two children, ages 20 and 16. Thic Chic marks a career shift after 25 years as a licensed massage therapist working in spas and wellness centers.

For 15 years, she’s run her own massage practice. Since 2020 she’s been at Lake Avenue in St. James in the space she’s now transformed into a boutique. She still sees massage clients two days a week.

The boutique offers a wide variety of indie and high-end pieces, from dressy to casual — including dresses, pants, jackets, loungewear and shoes. Prices range from $3 to $250, with a typical purchase around $80. Anthropologie, Loft Plus and Lilly Pulitzer are popular in the store.

Inventory comes from a mix of Pomisel’s own collection, thrift stores and estate sales. "I go all over," she says. "I’m constantly looking."

Her curation process is meticulous. "The first thing I look at is the print and the material. I really love natural fibers — silk, cotton, linen. Then I check the brand and inspect the quality — no stains, no tears."

Now eight months into her fashion venture, promoted through Instagram and her website, Pomisel is heartened by customer moments that feel magical: a teen finding the perfect prom dress, or a businessperson picking up something stylish for work.

"I love that," she says. "It makes me feel good."
