For the 30th anniversary of the 1996 closure of Kings Park and Central Islip Psychiatric Centers and their consolidation into the much smaller Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, this lecture by Joseph M. Galante, author of Long Island State Hospitals, examines the history of state hospitals in our area, the evolution of public mental health care, and the lessons this history offers for the future. Drawing on historical research and clinical experience, the author will explore more than a history of buildings, delving into how changing definitions of mental illness, shifting public expectations, and revolving societal demands transformed the mission of New York's state hospitals. The program consists of a 75-minute illustrated lecture, followed by an open floor for audience questions and discussion. Joseph M. Galante, M.A., LMHC-D, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with Diagnostic Privilege who maintains a private clinical practice and is a former state hospital staffer
