A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a pedestrian on Thursday night in Holbrook, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The pedestrian, identified as 66-year-old Mario Corvasce, of Holbrook, "was in the roadway" in front of 780 Broadway Ave. when the driver, traveling south, struck him about 9:15 p.m., the department wrote in a news release.

Corvasce was brought to, and pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, according to the release.

In an email, the police press office said police are investigating what the man was doing in the roadway. A passerby called 911. There are no leads so far on the driver, the email said.
