Nassau homicide detectives are investigating a death at a home in a quiet Massapequa neighborhood Monday, authorities said.
Officers swarmed the neighborhood just west of Massapequa High School at 1:30 a.m. Police aviation units were hovering overhead Monday morning. Nassau police closed Beaumont Avenue.
Police searched a home on the street, where a crime scene unit, a police ambulance and patrol cars were parked.
Officials declined to immediately provide additional details, citing the ongoing investigation.
Paul Forman, 79, who lives at the end of the street, said he awoke to helicopters at 5 a.m. and saw the crime scene out his front door.
He said a neighbor was crying outside.
Friends were seen carrying drinks and groceries into the family's house as others sat on the front porch surveying the police tape and news cameras.
Anthony Boccia, who lives on a neighboring street, said residents were up all night with the sound of helicopters and flashing police lights.
"It's a very sad situation," he said.
The area is two blocks north of Merrick Road, just east of Massapequa Lake.
The nearby high school was not impacted by the investigation, a school spokesperson said.
