Mastic Beach shooting sends man to hospital; another is charged

A man shot another man in the leg during an argument early Sunday in Mastic Beach, Suffolk police said. 

Sammy Darby, 48, and another man were arguing in the market of the Track Gas Station on Neighborhood Road at about 1:15 a.m., according to a police news release.

The men were asked to leave but continued their dispute outside, and Darby shot the other man in the leg, police said. The injured man, whom police did not identify, was taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Patchogue. His wound was not life-threatening, the news release said.

Darby, who police said is homeless, was charged with second-degree assault. He is being held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in First District Court in Central Islip, police said.
