Sage Arias-Brown, accused of killing father in Mastic home Monday, arraigned on murder charge

A Lake Ronkonkoma man charged in the stabbing death of his father was remanded to jail following a Tuesday morning arraignment.

Sage Arias-Brown, 33, was arraigned in Suffolk District Court in Central Islip on a second-degree murder charge in the death of his father Edward Brown, 69, before Judge Alonzo Jacobs.

Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Melissa Grier said around 12:30 a.m. Monday Arias-Brown entered his father’s Mastic apartment and stabbed him multiple times in the torso and abdomen with a knife. During the attack, Brown was able to call 911.

Grier said a witness heard Arias-Brown enter the apartment and then heard Brown’s screams for help. The witness also saw Arias-Brown leave the apartment.

Emergency services attempted to revive Brown, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found Arias-Brown near the Mastic apartment and were able to identify him because of the witness account.  Evidence at the scene also contributed to his arrest, Grier and court documents said.

Despite being escorted by officers and wearing handcuffs, Arias-Brown walked quickly into the Central Islip courtroom. He briefly turned to look at family members. Wearing a black and white track suit, he held his head up through most of the proceeding.

Defense attorney Katherine Fernandez said her client has no prior convictions and has mental health problems. Earlier this year, Arias-Brown was charged with robbing a TD Bank in Lake Ronkonkoma. That case is pending.

Jacobs said Arias-Brown was to be remanded to jail until his next court date on Friday.

As Arias-Brown was escorted out of the courtroom, he turned again to face his family members and nodded.

Both Grier and Fernandez declined to comment afterward.
