Manuel Escalara Ibanez, of Spain, accused in Shelter Island rape, police say

A man accused of rape on Shelter Island and traveling in the United States on a visitor’s visa was arrested at Kennedy Airport on Monday, Shelter Island police said.
At 10:22 p.m., Shelter Island detectives arrested Manuel Escalara Ibanez, 23, of Madrid, Spain. Police transported him to the Shelter Island Police Department where he was processed and then arraigned in Shelter Island Justice Court.
Escalara Ibanez was charged with first-degree rape and criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, police said.
He was sent to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 cash bail, $200,000 bond or a $500,000 partially secured bond.
Escalara Ibanez was traveling in the United States on a J-1 visa, a nonimmigrant visa for individuals approved to participate in exchange visitor programs.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Escalara Ibanez works as a waterfront safety instructor at Quinipet Camp & Retreat Center on Shelter Island.
The camp did not immediately provide a comment.
Escalara Ibanez was ordered by the court to surrender his passport. If released, he must remain in New York State under the further direction of the court.
An order of protection was also issued on behalf of the victim, police said.
Police did not provide further details of the alleged incident in question or of his arrest at JFK.
