Sewanhaka High School closed Monday due to 'significant' water damage

Floral Park’s Sewanhaka High School will be closed on Monday due to "significant" water damage from a "plumbing issue" over the weekend, officials said.
"This decision was made in the interest of student and staff safety, and out of an abundance of caution, after our facilities team assessed the extent of the damage," school Superintendent Regina Agrusa said in a letter to families.
Career and technical education, PACE and Prestige tutoring will also be canceled for the day. Any games or athletic practices that are scheduled for Monday will not be affected by the school closure.
A school spokesperson did not elaborate on the "plumbing issue" to Newsday. Agrusa said that staff and outside specialists were cleaning up the mess.
"We are confident our efforts will ensure the building is safe, clean, and fully operational before students and staff return," she said in the letter.
The superintendent said that her office will provide an update regarding the school schedule for the rest of the week on Monday afternoon.
"We understand that an unexpected school closure can disrupt family schedules and routines, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause," Agrusa said in her note.
She invited parents to call her or Principal John Kenny with any questions.
