West Islip's Robert McAteer, 70, killed crossing Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow

A West Islip man was killed Tuesday night after being struck by a car in East Meadow, Nassau County police said.
About 8:40 p.m., a 70-year-old pedestrian, identified by police late Wednesday afternoon as Robert McAteer, was crossing Hempstead Turnpike near Franklin Avenue when an eastbound 2014 Toyota Camry driven by a 70-year-old woman, struck him, police said.
McAteer was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene.
An investigation is ongoing.
Police closed Hempstead Turnpike between Third Street and Franklin Avenue and reopened by 1:45 a.m.
