Hempstead house fire displaces 12 people, including 2 children

A dozen people were displaced Wednesday morning after a fire swept through a multifamily Hempstead residence, authorities said.
Just before 8:30 a.m., the Hempstead Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at a house on Maryland Avenue, the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office said.
Firefighters found flames coming from the second floor and attic; all occupants had evacuated the home, the fire marshal’s office said.
About 75 firefighters, including crews from the Hempstead, Garden City, Uniondale, Freeport, South Hempstead, West Hempstead, Rockville Centre, North Bellmore, Franklin Square & Munson, Elmont and Westbury fire departments, put out the fire in just under two hours.
No injuries were reported.
The house was left unhabitable, displacing 10 adults and two children, officials said.
The American Red Cross was asked to assist the displaced.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal's office and Nassau police Arson/Bomb Squad.
