A toddler remained in a hospital Monday evening after she was found unresponsive in a Mastic Beach pool, Suffolk County police said.

The young girl was discovered about 4:50 p.m. "unresponsive in a backyard pool on Mill Drive," a Suffolk County Police Department spokesperson told Newsday via email. The spokesperson did not say who discovered the child.

The toddler was transported first to NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk in Patchogue, then to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said. Her condition was not immediately available late Monday.

Suffolk police Seventh Squad detectives based in Yaphank are investigating the incident.

Approximately 125 New Yorkers died by drowning in 2024 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between ages 1 and 4 across the United States. Appointing a designated watcher over those in the water, building a fence or other barrier around pools and outfitting children with Coast Guard-approved life jackets are among the precautions experts said Long Islanders should take to prevent drownings, Newsday previously reported.
