Mineola fire damages home and displaces 3 as rash of Nassau fires continues, officials say

The ninth fire in less than 48 hours in Nassau County damaged a Mineola home on Monday, displacing three residents, fire officials said.

At 8:45 a.m., the Mineola Fire Department was dispatched to a fire in a two-story private dwelling on Croyden Road near East Old Country Road. About 50 firefighters, including mutual aid from the Garden City and Westbury fire departments, brought the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, Deputy County Fire Coordinator Nicholas E. Corrado said in a statement.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported, but three residents were displaced, he said. Nassau County Fire Marshal investigators and Nassau police Arson/Bomb Squad detectives are investigating the cause of the fire.

The Village of Mineola Building Department was assessing the damage to the structure, Corrado said.

The fire was the latest in a spate of blazes in Nassau County.

The Mineola fire is the ninth fire in Nassau County to break out in less than 48 hours fire officials said. The unusual string of fires began in Seaford, where a house fire on Ray Street at 11:42 a.m. Saturday displaced two residents.

Two other fires broke out in East Rockaway and Valley Stream on Saturday afternoon, while fires at a Lynbrook public works garage and in homes in Wantagh and Baldwin broke out Saturday evening.

A fire at a commercial building in Franklin Square broke out early Sunday, followed by a South Bellmore house fire Sunday evening.

Fifty firefighters battled a shed fire in Bellmore on Sunday night that was melting the siding of two nearby homes, endangering both. That blaze was brought under control in about 20 minutes, and no one was hurt, Corrado said.

In total, fire officials reported one person injured over that period with 20 displaced. About 550 firefighters from multiple departments across Nassau responded to the nine fires, authorities said.

The string of Nassau fires comes days after a Bellmore house fire left a man dead, a woman in critical condition and four others displaced.

In Suffolk, however, the Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s office said Sunday there were no significant fires reported over the weekend. A house fire was reported in Bay Shore Monday evening.
