1 pedestrian killed, another critical in Central Islip crash, police say

A pedestrian was killed and another critically injured when they were struck by a car in Central Islip Saturday night, Suffolk police said.
Jacinto Santos, 55, and Mauro Zaldivar-Cruz, 38, both of Central Islip, were struck on Wilson Boulevard near St. Johns Street just before midnight Sunday, police said in a news release.
Santos was pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital. Zaldivar-Cruz was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, police said.
The driver was not injured and stayed at the scene. His car was impounded for a safety check. Police said detectives from its third squad are investigating the crash.
