Election Day is here and while polls are open statewide from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., some essential government functions are shuttered today.

Election Day is not a federal holiday but it is a state holiday in New York. Here's what that means for Long Islanders:

Banks can choose to close but many of the large commercial institutions are open. The New York Stock Exchange is open.

New York State courts are closed except for criminal arraignments.

Post offices are open.

Most public schools on Long Island are closed. New York City public school students and teachers, meanwhile, have a remote learning day.
