Woman's body found in Manorville woods; police investigating as 'criminal in nature'
The Suffolk County Police Department is investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a wooded area in Manorville.
A preliminary probe has determined the cause of death to be "criminal in nature," police said in a news release on Thursday.
The woman has not been identified, pending an autopsy, police said on Friday
Suffolk police said officers were searching the wooded area near Manorville and Riverhead for a Riverhead woman reported missing Jan. 29.
Police said Kathleen Trent, 63, was reported missing to Riverhead police by her son, who said she had not been seen or heard from since Jan. 27. Trent was last seen at her home on Forge Road.
She was described as 5 feet 2 inches tall with blond hair and blue eyes.
Officers were searching for Trent in a wooded area in Manorville on Connecticut Avenue south of River Road, when they discovered a woman's body around 3:21 p.m. on Wednesday, police said.
Police did not say if the woman found matched a description of Trent.
The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office is performing an autopsy to determine the woman's identity and specifics about the cause of death, police said.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
