A brush fire near Montauk Highway in East Hampton on Wednesday afternoon shut the road down in both directions west of Dolphin Drive, according to 511ny, a state Department of Transportation traffic website.
The fire was first reported shortly before 5 p.m., according to the website. Montauk Highway, which was closed after the fire broke out, had reopened as of about 6:45 p.m., the website said.
Michael Martino, a spokesman for Suffolk County Executive Edward P. Romaine, confirmed the fire was no longer active Wednesday evening.
Messages left with a chief and with the East Hampton Fire Department we’re not immediately returned.
An alert posted on the East Hampton Town website said the fire was "approximately the size of a football field."
