Man, 58, dies after boat capsizes in waters off Captree State Park

A man died late Friday after his boat capsized as he attempted to launch it into the waters off Captree State Park, state police said Saturday.
Fire and police officials responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. to a call to perform a water rescue for a man “under a boat” in the water at the boat basin, which is at the eastern tip of Jones Beach Island, according to Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services officials.
Members of the West Islip Fire Department removed the sole victim from the water, First Assistant Chief Michael Delgado said.
The 58-year-old man, whom officials have not identified, was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead, state police said in a news release.
An investigation showed the man was trying to launch his 16-foot Boston Whaler at the Captree State Park Piers, according to state police, who said witnesses saw the boat "striking the docks multiple times before capsizing."
New York State Parks Police, Suffolk County Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard all responded to the incident, state police said.
