A Mastic man drowned Saturday after a kayak he and a boy were in overturned on Wildwood Lake in Northampton, according to Southampton Town police.

A witness in a different boat told officers he was able to pull the 8-year-old boy to safety, but could not reach the adult. Adalfo Castro, 35, of Mastic, was pronounced dead a short time later at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, police said.

The witness had called police to report seeing the kayak overturn and drop the duo in the water about 4:45 p.m., according to a news release.

Southampton police patrol and marine units responded to the scene, where they were assisted by ambulance volunteers from both Riverhead and Flanders. Riverhead Fire Department personnel pulled Castro from the water and performed CPR on him, police said.

Wildwood is a natural lake in Southampton Town with a surface area of about 72 acres and a maximum depth of about 40 feet, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. It is used primarily this time of year for fishing freshwater species.
