A pedestrian was fatally struck while walking in a Selden roadway on Thursday night, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The pedestrian was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was declared dead, the department wrote in a news release issued Friday. The department will not disclose his name until his family is notified.

The crash, in front of 761 Middle Country Rd. around 9:30 p.m., involved a Mercedes-Benz ML350 SUV being driven west.

The driver was not hurt in the crash, police said.

Sent a list of questions, the police press office did not say how the driver happened to strike the pedestrian or where he was in the roadway. But the office said in an email there is "No criminality."

Newsday has reported that its analysis found that Long Island’s roads are among New York State’s deadliest to walk and bike on, but few drivers involved in crashes that kill pedestrians and bicyclists face criminal charges.

At least 46 people have been killed so far this year in traffic crashes, according to Newsday’s fatality tracker.

More coverage: Every 7 minutes on average a traffic crash causing death, injury or significant property damage happens on Long Island. A Newsday investigation found that traffic crashes killed more than 2,100 people between 2014 and 2023 and seriously injured more than 16,000 people.
