The Huntington Town Board is holding a special meeting Friday where it will be presented with the tentative 2027 town budget.
The town clerk needs to publicly present the budget to the board by Monday, according to state law.
Newsday reported last month that the board approved a measure that allows the town to pierce the tax cap in the budget, something that Town Supervisor Ed Smyth said at the time “is necessary.”
He said last month that he was considering presenting a $269 million budget, which would see the average town homeowner pay an additional $25 per month.
Friday's meeting is open to the public, but there will be no public hearings or public portion of the meeting. The presentation of the tentative budget is the only agenda item.
The preliminary budget will be available to view on the town’s website.
“This [tentative] budget can be adjusted and anyone who wants to make an amendment must present the change in a resolution,” town spokesperson Christine Geed said. “Adding anything or taking anything out will now have to be done at an official town meeting.”
The preliminary budget will ultimately be presented for a public hearing scheduled for Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. A budget must be approved by Nov. 20, Geed said.
Friday's meeting will be held at 10 a.m. in the town board room at Town Hall, 100 Main St., Huntington.
