NYU Langone Health has secured Brookhaven Town approval for a pair of new parking areas at its East Patchogue hospital — the first step in a planned $650 million expansion announced earlier this year.

The health care chain plans to add 144 beds in a new tower at NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk, previously Long Island Community Hospital and formerly known as Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center. NYU Langone completed its purchase of the hospital in March.

As part of the hospital expansion, NYU Langone plans to add 399 parking stalls — 191 in the hospital's south parking lot and 208 in the southeast lot, both accessible from Sills Road, hospital representatives said at a Dec. 11 public hearing at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville.

Hospital officials said additional parking will be needed for an expected increase in patients and staff when the 270,000-square-foot expansion is completed. NYU Langone officials did not say how many parking slots the hospital currently has.

In a statement emailed to Newsday, NYU Langone Health media relations director James Iorio said the parking lot expansion "will address current parking concerns at the hospital and allow NYU Langone to continue to improve and expand the services provided to Brookhaven residents at this hospital."

The town board, acting as the planning board, voted 7-0 to approve a site plan for the parking project. The plan faced no opposition at the public hearing.

The hospital expansion has not come before the town board for approval. NYU Langone officials have not announced when they plan to start construction.

Brookhaven Councilman Neil Foley, who lives in nearby Blue Point, said the new parking was an important step in the overall expansion.

“So far, it’s been a wonderful process between the town and [the NYU Langone] team. Health care’s biggest issue … is usually parking, so this is the first critical step in the future," he said before the town board vote. “I think I can speak for the community, we’re looking forward to the upgrades down the road.”

Hospital officials have said the tower would centralize nursing on several floors and provide improved areas for the pharmacy, physical therapy and other services. The tower also will modernize the hospital with the newest technology and capabilities, officials have said.

The hospital currently has 306 beds, 11 surgical rooms and 20 inpatient psychiatric beds, Newsday previously reported.

NYU Langone announced an affiliation agreement in 2022 with Long Island Community Hospital, then the last independent hospital on Long Island. Two years later, NYU Langone sought to fully merge with the hospital. The merger was completed earlier this year.
