2 dead, 2 seriously hurt in 4 crashes on Long Island

Four crashes — three in Suffolk, one in Nassau — have claimed the lives of two people, with two others seriously injured, police said in news releases.

Nassau police said an e-scooter operator was killed in an early Wednesday evening collision in Glen Cove, while Suffolk police said a fatal one-car crash just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in Dix Hills likely was caused by a medical episode.

A motorcyclist was seriously injured when he crashed his dirt bike into the back of a vehicle stopped in traffic on Wednesday, Suffolk police said. And a pedestrian crossing Route 25A in Mount Sinai was seriously injured early Thursday. 

The first of the four crashes, according to Nassau County police, occurred about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday when a 23-year-old man operating an e-scooter collided with a 2023 Jeep Wrangler being driven by a 19-year-old woman near the intersection of Dosoris Way and Elliot Place in Glen Cove.

Police said the e-scooter operator, identified as David Anthony De Jesus, of Roslyn, was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Jeep, whose identity was not released by police, was not injured in the crash.

Police said no charges had been filed related to the crash and that the investigation was ongoing.

The other three crashes occurred in Suffolk.

Police said the first occurred when Vincent McKie, 45, of Bay Shore, was operating a Suzuki DRZ dirt bike south on Brentwood Road and crashed into the right rear of a 2025 Acura RDX stopped in traffic around 9:15 p.m.

Police said McKie was thrown from the dirt bike. He was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of what were described as "serious injuries." The 26-year-old driver of the Acura was not injured.

No one has been charged in that crash, and both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.

The third crash, which proved fatal, involved a single vehicle and occurred about 11:25 p.m. in Dix Hills.

Police said Matthew Adcock, 54, of Huntington, was driving a 2016 Ford Edge north on Dix Hills Road just south of Hren Court when his SUV left the roadway, crashing into a fence and a large hedge. Adcock was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives believe Adcock experienced a medical episode leading up to the crash, police said in a statement on Thursday.

In the fourth crash, a Miller Place driver in a 2020 Acura was heading west in the left lane on Route 25A, approaching Chestnut Street, when he struck Yerlin Amaya, who was crossing the road, at 12:55 a.m. Thursday, Suffolk police said

Amaya, 17, of Mount Sinai, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The Acura driver was not injured.

Suffolk police is asking anyone with information regarding the Suffolk crashes to contact the department.
