Smith Point Bridge fully reopened in time for Memorial Day weekend

After weeks of repairs, both lanes of the Smith Point Bridge have reopened in advance of Memorial Day weekend.

The bridge, connecting mainland Long Island to Fire Island, was previously open to one lane of traffic. It was fully reopened on Wednesday, Suffolk County spokesperson Michael Martino said.

Officials briefly placed a weight limit on the bridge in November after an inspection found structural deterioration. It was later reopened to only single-lane crossings.

Built in 1959, the bridge leads from the William Floyd Parkway in Shirley to Smith Point County Park, the most heavily visited park in Suffolk, officials said. Up to 3,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily during the summer.

The announcement comes weeks after officials announced the construction of a new Smith Point Bridge to replace the existing span.

The new bridge is estimated to cost nearly $150 million and have a 75-year life span. It will feature a protected pedestrian and bicycle path, officials said.
