How to get to the U.S. Open: Take train, shuttles, Hampton Jitney, helicopter, ferry

The 126th U.S. Open Championship begins June 15 at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and the U.S. Golf Association and Long Island and state officials have just released parking and transportation information for fans.

The event runs June 15-21.

"The transportation program utilizes expanded rail service, satellite parking facilities, shuttle operations and traffic-management measures designed to provide fans with a convenient and efficient travel experience while minimizing additional traffic impacts on local residents, businesses and area commuters," the USGA said in a statement Friday.

Officials said the plan was the result of "an 18-month collaboration" between the USGA, Long Island Rail Road, other transit agencies and local law enforcement partners. It includes expanded LIRR service; parking at Calverton airfield, the Hampton Classic Horse Show grounds in Bridgehampton and the Shinnecock Nation Reservation; accessible parking; helicopter travel between New York City and the venue; the Hampton Jitney; and even ferry service from Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Officials also stressed fans traveling from points west of the Shinnecock Canal were "strongly encouraged" to use ride-share service to a local LIRR station to access train service to the event — or suggested they be dropped at the Blue Lot at Calverton to use the U.S. Open express shuttle service.

There will be road restrictions and traffic on Sunrise Highway, County Road 39, Montauk Highway, Sandy Hollow Road, North Sea Road, Hill Street, Hampton Road and Shrubland and Sebonac roads. Officials warn of the potential for significant delays.

 The USGA said that expected daily traffic volumes and commute times — especially between the NY 27-NY24 interchange, over the Shinnecock Canal crossing and extending to Bridgehampton — are anticipated to be greater than usual.

The heaviest traffic likely will be 5-10 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.

Fans using the LIRR will be able to travel the Montauk Branch to a temporary station adjacent to Shinnecock Hills and will access the course via a pedestrian bridge over County Road 39, officials said.

The Hampton Jitney will be available from points east, including Montauk, Amagansett, Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton, Water Mill and East Hampton, with shuttle pickup and drop-off locations in "close proximity" to Admission Gate 2 at the Stony Brook Southampton Campus.

Ride-share and passenger drop-offs at the campus will be accessible only via Montauk Highway, officials said. No parking or vehicle staging will be permitted at the location, and only vehicles carrying 15 passengers or fewer will be permitted to stage through the area, officials said.
