Wyandanch fire leaves 1 injured, home uninhabitable, officials say

Firefighters rescued an injured woman from a Wyandanch house fire Sunday morning, authorities said.

Officials with the Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company said several residents of the home on Clearview Drive were attending a church service at the time and no one else was inside the residence.

The two-story home caught fire shortly before 8 a.m., according to Wyandanch Fire Company Chief Aaron Ron. The chief said the home is currently uninhabitable.

Firefighters rescued the injured woman from the home, which had flames shooting out of the upper floors as the blaze spread to the attic, Ron told Newsday.

The woman was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of burns to one of her arms, he said.

The fire company — with the help of Deer Park, Dix Hills, Melville, Lindenhurst and West Babylon fire departments and the North Babylon and East Farmingdale fire companies — brought the blaze under control in about an hour.

Two firefighters were injured in the effort, Ron said. One refused medical treatment and the other was taken to Plainview Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

He said the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Representatives from the American Red Cross arrived at the home to offer assistance, but the residents will be staying with family or friends, Ron said.
