The inclement weather canceled Monday’s FourLeaf Air Show at Jones Beach, the state parks department and FourLeaf Federal Credit Union announced.

“When we saw the weather forecast yesterday, we had concerns that we would not be able to host the air show,” said George Gorman, Long Island regional director of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

“We have a pilot safety briefing at 7 a.m. every morning of the air show. The National Weather Service has a representative that goes through the weather for the day," said Gorman. "It was obvious there was rain that was going to occur and be heavy at times throughout the day, and visibility was diminished considerably. The other factor is, with the forecast, there wouldn’t be very many people at Jones Beach to watch the show.”

Monday would have been the final day of the air show this year, following Friday's practice session and Sunday's performance.

Considering the forecast, why not have the show on Saturday?

“On Saturday, the performers were involved in the flyovers of New York City down the Hudson River and the flyover in Washington, D.C., so they were already booked for those,” Gorman said.

Sunday's show attracted 268,000 people, the second-highest attendance in the event's history, organizers said.

"While we’re disappointed that we won’t be able to be at Jones Beach today, we are incredibly grateful for the unforgettable weekend we shared celebrating America’s 250th," a statement on the FourLeaf Air Show website said Monday. "Thank you to the hundreds of thousands of spectators who joined us, and to the talented aviators from the United States and around the world who made this year’s Air Show so special."
