Long Island weather: Showers, possibly severe storms Tuesday with flash flood risk

Afternoon showers are falling on Long Island, and the possibility of severe storms later Tuesday could bring isolated flash floods.

The National Weather Service said the scattered storms could also carry damaging wind gusts of up to 58 mph.

The unsettled weather should last most of the day and likely through 2 a.m. Wednesday. While Suffolk County may see precipitation of less than 1/10th of an inch, Nassau may see between one-quarter and half an inch. Higher rainfall totals are possible if thunderstorms occur.

"The higher threat is going to be toward the city in Nassau County, and as you go further east, a little bit less of a threat of the severe piece of these thunderstorms," weather service meteorologist Dave Radell said. 

The service said isolated flash floods are possible for areas that experience rapid runoff with heavy rainfall.

Parts of Nassau have a small risk of tornadoes, with a probability of between 2% and 4%, along with the metro area, due to high winds, the weather service said.

"It's what we're calling an isolated threat," Radell said. "The threat is not very high, but it's not zero."

The first week of September will continue to see rainy conditions, as the same storm threats are likely Wednesday and Thursday. 

The pattern should break on Friday, allowing for a sunny and dry Labor Day weekend with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s.
