The National Weather Service says there is a 40% percent chance of scattered snow showers in store Sunday for Long Island.

Warmer temperatures are in store for Long Island for the next two days, to be followed with a, hopefully, last gasp of colder weather Sunday into Monday, forecasters said Friday.

But along with that cold front is the possibility of precipitation, first rain and then the frozen kind, with a "slight chance" of snow showers predicted for Sunday.

Overnight temperatures Sunday into Monday will be dropping into the teens and expected lows around 17 degrees. Monday will also be cold, with highs in the high 20s and a low of 20 degrees.

No significant accumulations are expected. But the weather service said there's at least a 30% chance of more snow and rain on Tuesday, as well.

A small craft advisory remains in effect for waters east of Montauk until 1 a.m. Saturday.

And though the weather service has no other advisories, warnings or watches in effect for Long Island, the Friday area forecast discussion noted: "A cold front moves through the area during Saturday night, but with little moisture to accompany it."

The discussion said that while the thermal profile supports snow, any accumulation would be an inch or less.

While systems during the week could contain threats of snow, the weather service described those threats as minimal, noting that while forecast models see possible rain — and the possibility of a wintry mix of rain and snow — the chance for snow accumulation next week appears minimal.
