Long Islanders dreading cold winter conditions will have a brief respite next week as warmer temperatures settle across Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Highs are forecast to reach the mid-to-upper 40s on Saturday before a "warm up" brings Sunday's high to the low 60s in Nassau County and high 50s out on the East End, said Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Upton office. To start the workweek, temperatures are expected to climb to the around 60 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, the weather service forecasts.

Temperatures in early March typically range between around 30 degrees and 45 degrees, according to the weather service's historical data.

Rain will move into the area on Saturday night, clearing out foggy conditions. The wet weather may persist into Sunday morning, Ciemnecki told Newsday on Saturday morning.

"We’re going to have chances of rain throughout the day tomorrow, but I think the better chances will be overnight" into Sunday, he said.

Monday and Tuesday are then expected to be dry.

While temperatures are warming up to start the week, don't put away that winter coat just yet. A "cool down" is on the way for Friday with highs in the lower 40s, Ciemnecki said.

While it becomes more difficult for winter conditions to persist as spring approaches, he said he couldn't rule out the possibility of winter weather.

"It’s still too soon to say we’re not going to see that again this year," Ciemnecki said.
