Carissa Kellman
Newsday Travel Reportercarissa.kellman@newsday.comI’ve been telling stories for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I filled folders with handwritten stories, then graduated to scripting, filming and editing my own YouTube videos. I loved visualizing worlds, personifying characters and figuring out how to keep an audience hooked. Those instincts eventually led me to study journalism and sports communication at Marist College.
I joined Newsday in 2022 as a high school sports reporter, where I grew into a multimedia journalist covering everything from local sidelines to unforgettable professional sports moments for NewsdayTV. Along the way, I learned how to think visually, move fast and tell stories that truly connect with the community. I now bring those skills into my role as a travel reporter.
I try to show people a familiar spot in a new way — or something that maybe they’re surprised was so close to home.
I was born and raised on Long Island and grew up exploring it from end to end, while also traveling across the country and abroad to discover new cultures with a curiosity that continues to shape how I report and recommend destinations. Now, you’ll find me chasing family-friendly adventures, weekend getaways, Long Island and New York City experiences, Northeast escapes and all-season ideas that make exploring feel easy and exciting. I love spotlighting attractions, day trips and hidden gems, always keeping different budgets, travel styles and accommodations in mind so there’s something for everyone, whether you’re planning a quick Saturday escape or stretching a long weekend as far as it can go.
My role is deeply rooted in video storytelling. I report, produce and host a weekly series for NewsdayTV and social platforms while also writing features, which means I get to take readers and viewers along for the ride in real time. Some of my favorite projects include kayaking to a lobster lunch, hotel hopping around NYC and Long Island without booking a room, capturing Montauk’s off-season magic and uncovering spaces and experiences that help people see familiar places in new ways.
My goal is simple: take you somewhere new, or help you fall back in love with a place you thought you already knew, give you a smart game plan to explore it, and make travel feel fun, fresh and totally doable.
