Longtime Yankees general manager Brian Cashman years ago referred to the annual GM meetings as a “necessary evil.”

Cashman, who in his role as the club's GM, a position he has held since 1998, has attended each of those gatherings.

Until this year.

Cashman, because of what a club spokesman characterized as a “non-baseball related” situation that “popped up” over the weekend, is not in attendance at this year’s meetings at the Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas.

Cashman has been participating in the meetings remotely and will address the media via Zoom later in the day Wednesday.

Though these are the first GM meetings Cashman has missed, in past years - because of a variety of circumstances - he has not physically been in attendance at all of baseball’s annual winter meetings, which take place in December, during his tenure.

There was, for example, the 2003 meetings in New Orleans when notorious owner George Steinbrenner did not allow any of his executives to attend.

Among Yankees’ team hierarchy who have been in Las Vegas this week are assistant general managers Michael Fishman and Jean Afterman, director of baseball operations Matt Ferry, vice president of player development Kevin Reese and assistant director of player operations Michael Pinksy.
