The Mets' first-half roller coaster, as chronicled by Steve Cohen's social media

“I can’t say enough about the tenacity and grit this team displayed this season. We are all disappointed that it ended yesterday, but I’m so grateful for the incredible run the team went on. The Mets galvanized not just NY fans but baseball fans all over America. There is much to look forward to in ‘25 and beyond. LGM”
Steve Cohen post on X, Oct. 21, 2024
The day after the Mets’ unexpected and thrilling postseason run ended in Game 6 of the NLCS against the Dodgers, owner Steve Cohen posted the above message. It was full of pride (in addition to understandable sadness) and looked forward to a bright 2025.
The post was viewed by one million X users.
Cohen — or “Uncle Stevie” to many Mets fans — is unique among the 30 major-league owners in that he takes to social media to interact with his customers.
Most of his posts are about how the team is doing in a particular moment. Some are about issues surrounding Citi Field and the fan experience. Many are helpful — Cohen told a fan with a ticket issue to direct message him on March 30 — and all show the passion the Long Island billionaire has for the team he purchased in 2020.
With all that in mind, here is a recap of the Mets’ wild ride of a first half of the season as told through Cohen X posts — which often can be a wild ride themselves.

“Is everybody raring to go? LGM”
Like a kid waiting at the window for the candy store to open, Cohen posted an Opening Day message two days early and ended it with LGM (“Let’s Go Mets”). He interacted with a few fans.
“Best owner in sports,” one fan posted.

Citifield was rocking last night . Big crowd and a Lindor walk off. Come on out everybody and join the fun!

“Citifield was rocking last night. Big crowd and a Lindor walk off. Come on out everybody and join the fun!”
Francisco Lindor did indeed hit a walk-off home run — his first as a Met — against St. Louis on April 18 as the Mets improved to 13-7.

rival.
“Big series coming up against the Phillies Mon-Wed. Let’s bring the energy this week against a divisional rival.”
The Mets beat St. Louis the next two games to sweep the weekend series. But Cohen’s thoughts were about the upcoming series against the Phillies. The Mets swept that one, too, capping a seven-game winning streak on a 10th-inning walk-off single by Starling Marte on April 23, and had a five-game lead in the NL East.

We need to keep riding this wave . There will be mean reverson at some point but there is something special happening at Citifield. So much fun !

“We need to keep riding this wave. There will be mean reverson at some point but there is something special happening at Citifield. So much fun!”
Cohen’s cautious words about mean reversion proved prophetic when the team lost seven of their next 12. But they were still in first place by two games.

Storm clouds: The Mets fell out of first for the first time since April 9 on May 19 after a 3-1 loss in Boston.
JUNE 10
This team keeps grinding away . Relentless !

“This team keeps grinding away. Relentless!”
Another walk-off, another post on X. The Mets, who returned to sole possession of first on June 1, pushed their division lead back up to five on June 10 on a Jeff McNeil 10th-inning RBI single against Washington.
The lead would grow to a season-high 5½ games two days later. And then the Mets lost seven in a row and 10 of 11. They suffered multiple pitching injuries and couldn’t hit with runners in scoring position. Welcome to the June swoon.
JUNE 30
Tough stretch , no sugarcoating it . I didn’t see this coming . I’m as frustrated as everybody else . We will get through this period . Our injured pitching will come back over the next few weeks . It is unlikely the team’s hitting with RISP will continue at this weak pace. Keep…

After a difficult month, Cohen goes into supportive mode.

“Phenomenal win tonight led by the “Fab Four”
A congratulations and an attempt at nickname-stamping: Led by Lindor, Juan Soto, Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso, the Mets won in Baltimore, 7-6, in 10 innings. Cohen’s post leaves only two questions: When will the Mets/Beatles T-shirts go on sale? And which player is Ringo?
JULY 12
There seems to be less complaining after the team scored 7 runs in the 8th and 9th.Funny how that happens.

“There seems to be less complaining after the team scored 7 runs in the 8th and 9th. Funny how that happens.”
As we said, Cohen can sometimes be snarky (a Mets representative did not respond to a request to interview Cohen about his social media activity). On July 11, the Mets were staring at a third straight loss when they rallied for a victory in Kansas City.
The Mets enter the second half at 55-42, with a wild-card spot in hand and a one-half game deficit to the Phillies in the East. Injured pitchers Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea are back. The trade deadline is July 31.
How will it all turn out? Well, show up at Citi Field, or tune in to SNY.
Or just follow @StevenACohen2 on X. He’ll tell you how it turns out.
