Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was in critical but stable condition late Sunday after being wounded in an early morning shooting in midtown Manhattan, the NYPD said.
The Jets said in a statement Sunday that they were "aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time."
The shooting took place in front of 156 W. 38th St., where Sei Less, an Asian fusion restaurant is listed as the occupant. The restaurant is open from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturdays.
Police had responded to a 911 call at 2:09 a.m. on Sunday and observed a man with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, a spokesperson said earlier.
The man, later identified as Boyd, was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals, the police said.
Ernest Quander, a friend of Boyd's in Texas, told Newsday in a phone interview Boyd was "in good condition."
Early Monday, the NYPD released a description of a suspect in the shooting, describing him as man wearing a black cap, black sweatshirt, black pants, multicolored sneakers, and carrying a black bookbag.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the NYPD.
By 2:30 p.m. Sunday, there was no obvious hint of the shooting that occurred outside the restaurant more than 12 hours earlier. Flashes of red, white and blue bounced off the restaurant’s glass exterior from the NYPD sport utility vehicle parked across the street.
The restaurant's website says it "is located in the heart of the city and has become the ultimate destination for memorable events where every special moment becomes extraordinary."
"Proper attire required" reads a sign affixed to the wooden front door of the restaurant.
The Jets signed Boyd in the offseason to a one-year, $1.6 million contract. A special teams ace, Boyd didn’t play in any games for the Jets this season. He injured his shoulder during a training camp practice and was placed on season-ending injured reserve in August.
Boyd was a seventh-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 after attending the University of Texas. He spent four seasons with Minnesota before signing with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023. The Cardinals cut Boyd in October of that year. He joined the Houston Texans three weeks later.
Last season, Boyd appeared in 17 games for the Texans, mostly on special teams.
In a post on X, Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson II wrote: "Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety."
Harrison Phillips, a Jets defensive tackle, also on X, prayed for guidance for "every doctor, nurse, and surgeon who touches him lord. Give his family strength! Kris is a fighter and we’re all here for him."
