Aaron Glenn is moving closer to hiring an offensive coordinator and perhaps filling out his offensive staff.
The Jets held in-person interviews with Darrell Bevell and Greg Roman on Monday for the vacancy that was created when Tanner Engstrand was let go last week. These were second interviews for Bevell and Roman, both of whom have extensive offensive coordinator experience.
Frank Reich was considered the front-runner for the position and still might be. The Jets interviewed him virtually last week, but he hasn’t come in for a second interview yet.
Glenn reportedly had been in conversations with Reich before moving on from Engstrand. The initial plan was for Engstrand to stay on, but with his role and responsibilities lessened. Reich was a candidate to step in as a senior offensive coach and play-caller.
It remains possible that Reich will be named the Jets’ offensive coordinator and Bevell and/or Roman will be hired in a different role. The Jets need a quarterbacks coach, passing game coordinator and running game coordinator.
Bevell spent the past four seasons as the Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Miami twice finished in the top four in passing and passing touchdowns.
Bevell has been an NFL offensive coordinator for 15 seasons with the Vikings, Seahawks, Lions and Jaguars. He won a Super Bowl with Seattle. Bevell also has head-coaching experience, having served as the Jaguars' interim coach at the end of 2021 and the Lions' interim coach the previous season.
Roman has 12 years experience as an offensive coordinator with the 49ers, Bills, Ravens and Chargers, who fired him last month after two years. He led 10 top-eight rushing offenses, including four that were ranked No. 1 overall.
Ronald Curry and Lunda Wells also were a part of the first-round virtual interviews for the offensive coordinator position last week.
