The Jets made the first of what could be multiple deals before next Tuesday’s trade deadline., sending nickelback Michael Carter II and a seventh-round pick in 2027 to the Eagles for wide receiver John Metchie and a sixth-rounder in 2027, the team confirmed Wednesday night.
The Jets moving on from Carter was not a surprise, especially after they acquired Jarvis Brownlee from Tennessee in late September. Jets coaches are high on Brownlee's ability to cover and also play physically in the run game.
They also added some depth and insurance at wide receiver with Garrett Wilson sidelined the past two weeks with a knee injury and Josh Reynolds on injured reserve and out at least the next three games because of a hip issue.
The Jets are expected to be active on the trade market. Their disappointing 1-7 record has the new regime of general manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn listening to offers for players they inherited.
Quinnen Williams, Will McDonald, Quincy Williams, Breece Hall, Allen Lazard and Jermaine Johnson have all been mentioned in trade rumors.
The Jets signed Carter to a three-year, $30.75 million extension last year. Joe Douglas was the Jets general manager who drafted Carter in the fifth round in 2021 and gave him the extension. Douglas is now the Eagles’ senior personnel director/adviser to the general manager.
Carter appeared in 65 games for the Jets, recording 223 tackles, 26 passes defended and two interceptions. The NFL Network reported that Carter agreed to remove the $5 million injury guarantee in his contract for 2026 to join the reigning Super Bowl champs.
Metchie, a second-round pick of the Texans in 2022 out of Alabama, hasn’t played much for the Eagles this season. He has four catches for 18 yards. Metchie has caught 44 passes for 430 yards and a touchdown in his career. He will be a free agent after the season.
