From a first-round exit in 2022, a play-in loss in 2023 and a quarterfinal loss in 2024, Calhoun senior Drew Lennon remembers the sting of each as a member of the Colts boys soccer team.

He’s not alone. As one of 20 seniors for Calhoun, Lennon entered Friday’s quarterfinal against New Hyde Park determined to have a different result. After 80 minutes, the verdict was in: something special just might be brewing in Merrick.

Lennon scored the first two goals for second-seeded Calhoun in a dominant 6-0 home win over No. 10 New Hyde Park in the Nassau Class AA quarterfinal round. Calhoun (15-0-1) advances to face No. 3 South Side — a battle between two of Nassau’s three undefeated teams, along with Locust Valley — at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Farmingdale State in the Nassau Class AA semifinals. New Hyde Park finished 7-8-3.

“It’s definitely special, because I’ve been playing with these guys for 12, 13 years since I was, like, 4 years old,” Lennon said. “It’s great to be with your boys, get a win and keep that good energy going into the semifinals.”

Lennon added the first of the team’s six goals after some terrific dribbling from senior Lucas Nangle drew a foul in the 19th minute. Lennon then powered a shot into the top-right corner from 20 yards out.

A New Hyde Park handball in the 24th minute brought Lennon to the penalty spot, where the senior captain buried his shot into the bottom-right corner.

Senior Liam Brown added a goal less than two minutes later. Senior Jacob Bachrach followed it with tremendous hustle as he managed to keep a long pass in bounds before whipping a cross in for junior Jonas Wan to head in from the back post.

“There’s an unselfish mentality that’s really hard to teach, and [Bachrach] takes pride in that,” Calhoun coach Chris Vogel said.

It was the first goal of the season for Wan, who later added his second by curling a shot into the left corner of the goal from the top of the 18-yard box.

“It felt incredible,” Wan said. “I got a bunch of chances this season, but to score today was really fun and a great experience.”

Senior Jacob Basso scored the final goal as Calhoun secured its 10th shutout and 11th game with at least four goals. Senior midfielder Diego Morales did well to maintain possession and constant communication coming from seniors Austin Sheehan and Jack Gunn kept Calhoun ahead.

It’s those little details that can make all the difference as Lennon and the Colts take another step forward in the program’s search for the Colts' first county title since 2016.
