Three Section XI field hockey teams earned county crowns in the Suffolk Class A, B and C championships on Tuesday in Rocky Point.
No. 1 Sachem East notched a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Ward Melville to earn its second straight Class A county title with goals from Ashley Miller and Brooke Wasson. The team improved to 18-0 and will host Massapequa in the Long Island Class A championship at 10 a.m. Sunday.
“I’m elated for them,” coach Tina Moon said in an interview with WSHR Sachem Radio on Tuesday. “We worked really hard to do this back-to-back. We lost some really key players last year and to have others step up, I’m super proud. I never expected to go undefeated.”
Isabella Sharp-Senior and Kacey Berger each tallied an assist in the win. Hadley Torre scored and Alex Cotlet made five saves for Ward Melville, which finished 16-2.
No. 1 Eastport-South Manor (19-1) scored in overtime to earn a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Harborfields in the 'B' final. Cait Masera and Taylor Murtha each scored in the win.
The Sharks’ last county title came in 2023. Eastport-South Manor will next face Garden City in the Long Island Class B championship at noon Sunday at Sachem East. Emma Glick scored for Harborfields off an assist from Caroline Gilhuley. Harborfields finished 16-3.
Top-seeded Bayport-Blue Point earned its first Class C title in a 5-0 rout over No. 2 Pierson. Lily LiPuma scored a hat trick for the Phantoms, including a 1-on-1 breakaway to seal the win in the fourth quarter. Maddie Clark and Camryn Bruckner also added a goal each.
Coach Karen Gick said LiPuma, a junior, has become an increasingly important member of the team as this season progressed and that she looks forward to seeing how she continues to play in the postseason.
“We've seen her grow so much throughout the season and she just keeps getting better and better,” Gick said. “She probably had her best game yet [on Tuesday]. She handled the pressure, she stepped up in the moment and she still has more to come.”
Formerly a Class B team, Bayport-Blue Point’s last Suffolk title came in 2019.
“We've come close the last couple years, either ending in first place and making it to the county championship, or falling short in the semis,” Gick said. “This was something that we've been working really hard to get back to, so accomplishing the W on this one is really nice.”
LiPuma, Payton Weybrecht, Shannon Carney and Natalie Bosse all recorded assists. The Phantoms improved to 16-1 and will next face Carle Place in the Long Island Class C championship at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sachem East.
