CORTLAND — Ava Meyn and Aubrie Eisfeld have run around a lacrosse field together for as long as they can remember. Both are going off to different colleges, making Saturday their sendoff as teammates. After a lifetime of creating memories with one another, the senior duo was determined to make the last one, the best one.
Meyn scored five goals and dominated on the draw circle and Eisfeld had four goals and three assists to lead Bayport-Blue Point to a 17-7 victory over Queensbury in the state Class C girls lacrosse championship at SUNY Cortland.
Eisfeld assisted on two of Meyn's goals, as the players helped lead the Phantoms to their second state Class C title in three years.
“We’ve been playing together since, I can’t even tell you when,” Eisfeld said. “It’s just so special to be able to work together and get to this point together.”
Meyn and Eisfeld combined to score eight of the Phantoms' 12 first-half goals. Bayport-Blue Point led 5-1 after the first quarter and 12-2 at halftime.
“We had a conversation with them probably about a year-and-a-half ago saying, ‘You are both special players, but you’re even more special together,’ ” coach Ryan Gick said. “And that chemistry this year was paramount to our success.”
Eisfeld and Meyn both played key roles as sophomores two years ago in helps Bayport-Blue Point secure its first state title in program history. But their leadership proved pivotal, especially after the Phantoms lost in the Suffolk Class C championship game last year, and they were determined to end their high school tenures with a victory.
“We went out with a bang and that’s exactly what we wanted,” Meyn said. “I came into the game and said I’m going to have the best game ever and I think I had a great game, and I think our team had an amazing game, and that’s what’s most important.”
No one, however, may better exemplify Bayport-Blue Point’s determination than senior defender Emma Brown. The Stanford commit, who broke her ankle on April 14, was focused on returning if the Phantoms' season went long enough. She returned for the Southeast Regional Final on June 7 and played a key defensive role in BBP's final three postseason games.
“I just knew because we had the opportunity to make it this far, I wanted to make it back because no senior wants their last game to be on the sideline,” Brown said. “This meant everything.”
Kailey Bruckner had three goals and an assist and Emma Shanahan scored twice for Bayport-Blue Point (21-1), which had earned its second 20-win season in three years. Queensbury concluded its season with a 16-4 record.
“This team, they don’t stop,” Gick said. “They don’t take plays off, they battle together. It’s been a pleasure to be a part of this group, so I’m very proud of them. Two years ago was a special feeling and it’s no different today.”
The players shared hugs and tears on and off the field at SUNY Cortland, ending their season exactly how they dreamed.
“It’s a perfect ending to a near-perfect season and it’s crazy to think after all the time and effort that it’s all over now,” Brown said. “But it’s the best way it could end.”
“It’s so special, this program is absolutely incredible,” Meyn said. “I literally couldn’t ask for better people or better coaches. I would do another year if I could.”
