The narrative around the Huntington girls lacrosse team has flipped in real time.
Huntington has been a competitive team in Suffolk over the last few years, but the Blue Devils weren’t expected to go on deep postseason runs. But Huntington knew this season could be different. And as the victories continued to pile on throughout the season, the feelings of hope became the realization of an achievable goal.
Host Huntington defeated Floyd, 14-8, in Suffolk Division I girls lacrosse play on Monday to improve to 12-1 overall and 11-0 in Suffolk I. The Blue Devils have knocked off teams they’ve been unable to defeat in recent years and Floyd is the latest example of a program they got some revenge against.
“We’ve been on a run and we know now we’re a big target,” junior midfielder Jolie Weinschreider said. “Everyone wants to beat us because we’re at the top, but we haven’t let that get to us. Last year we lost to Floyd pretty badly and this time we really wanted to beat them and we did.”
Weinschreider had three goals and an assist, Sabrina Boyle had four goals and Grace Gordon added two goals and three assists to fuel another balanced attack for Huntington. The Blue Devils haven’t overly relied on one or two players throughout the season, and that depth has been key in their success.
“We are amazing all over the field,” Weinschreider said. “From our goalies to our defense, who have so many ground balls and interceptions, and our attackers, we all have so much talent that some of us didn’t even know we had and this year, we all have our specialities.”
“I think this year, we’ve really proved that all the pieces have come together and we have just as much passion, talent and grit as every other team does,” Boyle said. “And we’re proving it to these big [teams] to set the standard for Suffolk County lacrosse.”
Huntington scored the game’s first five goals 4:23 before Floyd answered with a 3-0 run to bring the score to 5-3 with 8:27 left in the second quarter on Monday. Huntington countered with four of the final five goals of the first half to take a 9-4 halftime lead and led by at least four goals the remainder of the contest.
Valentina Puccio added three goals and Devon St. John had a goal and two assists in the win. Rylie Wiegand had three goals and two assists and Emma DiMaio had two goals and three assists for Floyd (7-5, 7-3).
“If you look at the ball movement, they really do look for each other and they are so unselfish,” coach Katie Reilly said. “Even if you watch the celebrations, when someone else scores, they are genuinely so excited and it’s really helpful when your other teammates are having success and you’re genuinely happy for them like it’s your own. I think that’s a part of winning.”
Huntington hopes all that results in the program’s first county title since 1995.
“We know it only gets harder and we probably have to play those big teams as the postseason goes on,” Boyle said. “So we’re just learning from these games and learning to face all the adversity the rest of this season that will really shape us for the postseason.”
