Juan Soto, who was supposed to be mic’d up during the second inning of ESPN’s Mets-Yankees broadcast on Sunday night, canceled about “45 minutes” before game time, according to play-by-play man Karl Ravech, who made the announcement on the air. Brandon Nimmo filled in for Soto.

Earlier, ESPN reporter Buster Olney posted on X: “On Sunday Night Baseball, we’ve got the Mets and Yankees, Juan Soto wearing the mic, and we’ll ask him about Aaron Judge’s season.”

The reason for Soto’s change of heart is not known. He did not speak to reporters after the Mets’ 8-2 loss. Soto heard vicious boos from Yankees fans all weekend in his return to the Bronx.
