Keith McPherson was WFAN’s nighttime host from 2021 until Nov. 23, 2025, when he announced on social media that he was leaving his show to spend more time with his wife and 2-year-old son.

But there were no hard feelings at WFAN, and McPherson has continued at the station as a fill-in. His contract expires at the end of the month, and McPherson is hoping to maintain the part-time relationship as he pursues what’s next.

What won’t be next for McPherson? WFAN’s open overnight slot, which has been vacant since Chris McMonigle switched to team with Craig Carton on afternoon drive time.

McPherson, 37, recently filled in on overnights on consecutive days. It was only natural for his fans to wonder if he was interested in seeking the job permanently.

“There was a caller who was like, ‘Hey, would you take the overnight?’ and after doing it back-to-back, I'm like, ‘This is harder than my shift,’ ” McPherson told Newsday on Monday in a telephone interview. “Now, it's not harder if you don't have kids, but to go to sleep while it's bright outside, to go to sleep while people are moving and texting and calling, to program yourself to do that is tough.”

McPherson’s old shift was 7 p.m.-midnight when WFAN didn’t have a live game. But his show would be on from 11 p.m.-2 a.m. after a Yankees game.

“I switched to part-time because it was just too much on my family,” McPherson said. “I literally could not continue with the schedule anymore . . . I realized the thing that was causing the most trouble at home was me not being there at night and me not being able to get out of bed in the morning.”

McPherson, a die-hard Yankees fan, became known on what he called the “KM to A.M.” show for his entertaining postgame takes, good or bad, and for his playful jibing with Mets fans. His vibrant social media presence always made him more than just his radio show.

“Honestly, when I auditioned for WFAN [in 2021], I never thought they were going to say, ‘Hey, you're going to be a full-time host here, take over the nighttime slot for Steve Somers,’ ” he said. “I thought I'd be doing what I'm doing now: being on standby. So I hope to still be on standby as I find my next full-time gig, as I continue to grow my name and my brand online, because I feel like it's a permanent thing, right? I'm always going to be a part of the history of WFAN. I'm always going to say that I got my real start in media at WFAN. So I kind of want to be alumni and part of the family moving forward. And I think that's going to be good for both parties.”

In addition to filling in at WFAN, McPherson this week is branching out into national radio. On Wednesday and Thursday from 7-10 p.m., he will guest co-host “The Odd Couple” on Fox Sports Radio and SiriusXM with Rob Parker, a Queens native and former Newsday sports columnist.

“Rob is someone who I met a couple years back and I just kind of ran into at different baseball things and I brought him on my show and he's OG,” McPherson said. “He's been doing this 40 years, and for him to look out for me . . . it’s almost kind of like an ‘Unc’ vibe — and ‘Unc’ is a popular term with the kids — Rob is like ‘Unc’ looking out for his nephew.”

Parker, who like McPherson is Black, told Newsday: “I'm listening to Keith. I think he's super-talented, a new young voice in our business and somebody I want to do some shows with. We need more Keith McPhersons on the air. So this is my little chance at giving him a different platform and audience and I'm excited about it.”
