MacArthur Airport expands with new nonstop destinations

Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip is becoming a busy hub for domestic destinations that are just a few hours away. “We’ve worked hard over the last decade to transform ISP from a regional airport with only six nonstop destinations served by two airlines into a thriving transportation hub served by six air carriers and offering 18 nonstop routes,” Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said of the Ronkonkoma facility.
Here’s a look at five new spots that are a quick plane ride away from MacArthur Airport:
Lakeland, Florida

Flight duration: 2 hours and 41 minutes via Avelo Airlines and starting at $78 round-trip.
Just east of Tampa, Lakeland takes its name from the 38 named lakes around which many of the city’s neighborhoods and cultural spots are built.
Among the city’s lakes is Lake Mirror, known for its Frances Langford Promenade and Hollis Garden, a sprawling botanical garden surrounding neoclassical architecture.
Stroll through Munn Park Historic District’s early turn of the 20th century architecture, where you can also pick up a few antiques. Architecture lovers will want to explore the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings at Florida Southern College.
There’s a variety of theater, dance and live music and art lovers should head to the Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art, for everything from ancient artifacts to contemporary artworks. Kids of all ages can explore the interactive galleries at the Florida Children’s Museum.
Wilmington, North Carolina

Known as the “Gateway to Cape Fear,” this port city boasts a renowned restaurant, art gallery and shop-filled Riverwalk that runs along the Cape Fear River. There you can learn about World War II naval combat history touring the Battleship North Carolina.
In addition to a bustling downtown historic district, filled with 18th and 19th century architectural gems, there are more than 40 parks and 32 miles of trails, including 1898 Memorial Park, which explores the history of an 1898 coup d’etat — the only successful coup d’etat in U.S. history — in which white citizens overthrew the legally elected biracial government, killing many Black residents. There’s also 250-acre Greenfield Park, with trails and boat and kayak rentals, and Halyburton Park, with a nature and events center.
Located in an 1883 warehouse, Wilmington Railroad Museum features interactive displays and model trains that are a hit for the whole family.
Concord/Charlotte, North Carolina

The county seat of Cabarrus County, Concord exudes historic charm.
Wander around downtown Concord where you can see historic architecture, catch live performances, see an exhibition at the historic Greek Revival-style Cabarrus courthouse, where you can also catch live performances at its Davis Theatre. Shop and dine at Gibson Mill, a former textile mill turned community hub or rent a Jon boat on the 534-acre Lake Fisher.
Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina, is a 25-minute drive from Concord. It has a thriving arts scene, including the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
If speed is more your need, visit Charlotte Motor Speedway for exciting NASCAR action. Nature lovers will enjoy the Carolina Thread Trail (aka “The Thread”), where you can hike or bike along a network of trails linking 15 counties in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Boston

The capital of Massachusetts, Boston is a cultural hub with several notable theaters, performance spaces and museums, including Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston Children’s Museum, Boston African American National Historic Site, Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Museum of Fine Arts and the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum.
A great city for walking, visitors can take a self-guided Freedom Trail tour with 16 different historical sites or check out the Women’s, Black and Irish Heritage trails, the JFK Trail, revisiting the places the 35th president visited in Boston, the Rose Kennedy Greenway walking tour, Walk to the Sea, a tour of historical landmarks and skyscrapers or walk sections of the 7-mile Boston Common to Franklin Park parkland — the string of city parks is known as the Emerald Necklace.
You can also take a swan boat ride at Boston Public Garden, visit the sea turtles, sharks and other marine life at the New England Aquarium and spend a few hours at Faneuil Hall Marketplace for fine dining and shopping.

Sarasota, Florida

A haven for beach lovers, this city on Florida’s west coast is renowned for its white sandy beaches.
Water enthusiasts can kayak or paddleboard at Ken Thompson Park or The Bay Park, fish with Sarasota Fishing Fleet, take a boat tour with LaBarge Tropical Cruise, go on an ecotour with Suncoast Oasis Boat Tours or spy dolphins and marine birds on a Sarasota Bay Explorers cruise.
For culture aficionados, there’s dance, music and theater galore. For art, check out the Sarasota Art Museum, The Ringling, the sculpture garden at Art Center Sarasota and the Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy.
Nature lovers will enjoy Marie Selby Botanical Gardens with its century-old banyan tree and Sarasota Jungle Garden, where you can feed the flamingos.
