PepsiCo has recalled thousands of cases of Gatorade for undeclared dyes, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recall, voluntarily initiated Sept. 25, applies to cases of 28-ounce bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange and Gatorade Orange Zero that may contain undeclared dyes Yellow No. 6 and Yellow No. 5.
More than 122,000 cases sold in 37 states, including New York, are affected by the recall.
On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration categorized the pull as a Class II recall, meaning use of or exposure to the product could "cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences" or that the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
PepsiCo did not specify in the recall notice whether customers would be refunded for the affected products and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The FDA says some people can have hypersensitivity reactions to color additives. Yellow No. 5 can cause symptoms such as itching and hives, and federal rules require products containing it to identify the dye on their labels.
