General Motors is recalling more than 80,000 vehicles because of software and mechanical issues.

The first recall is for more than 67,000 Cadillac and Blazer vehicles because of a brake system control module defect that could cause a temporary loss of braking at slow speeds, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall report. The other recall involves more than 12,000 Chevy Express and GMC Savana vehicles because of a loose steering gear assembly nut that could cause drivers to lose steering control, according to a NHTSA recall report.

The recalls include certain models of the 2023-2027 Cadillac LYRIQ, the 2024-2027 Chevrolet Blazer EV, the 2025-2026 Cadillac CELESTIQ, the 2026-2027 Cadillac VISTIQ, the 2025-2026 Chevrolet Express and 2025-2026 GMC Savana vehicles.

GM knew of 20 minor accidents related to the Cadillac and Blazer defects, the recall report stated. There were no accidents reportedly related to the Savana or Express defects. GM submitted the two recall reports last week.

How do I find out if my car is recalled?

GM's website allows for vehicle owners to use their vehicle identification to see if their car is subject to a recall. The VIN numbers in the two recalls were added to GM's database on Oct. 29, according to the recall notices.

What happens when I bring my recalled car in?

General Motors will update the Cadillac and Blazers' brake system software to correct the defect, according to the notice. Vehicle owners who can get wireless software updates can accept them without going to a dealer in person. Alternatively, car owners may have the updates performed at a GM dealer.

GM has issued software updates for all of the affected vehicles with the exception of the 2023-2024 Cadillac LYRIQ vehicles, the recall alert says. The 2023-2024 LYRIQ vehicles will be placed in "stop delivery" by dealerships, which will be unable to deliver them to customers until the software fix is available, according to the recall notice.

Dealerships will inspect the serial numbers of Chevrolet Express and Savanna vehicles to determine if their steering gear assembly is subject to the recall, according to the alert. The dealership will replace the steering gear assembly if it matches the recall notice.

Vehicle owners with additional questions can contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267.
