The federal Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program awarded $93 million to 104 performing arts centers, playhouses, independent movie theaters and bars with live entertainment in Nassau and Suffolk counties, according to a Newsday analysis of federal data.

The aid arrived last year as many venues were running low on cash. They had been shut down for more than a year by New York State to slow the coronavirus’ spread.

Twenty-four institutions received $1 million or more. The average grant amount was $894,370, according to data from the U.S. Small Business Administration, which Newsday obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.
