Doug Geed, the former News 12 anchor and one of Long Island TV's best-known figures over a 37-year run there, will join NewsdayTV starting Monday, the media group announced Wednesday.

Geed, 66, will cover politics and produce East End content for NewsdayTV.

"The East End is where my heart is,” Geed said in a phone interview. "It's so peaceful to me, and that came across to viewers as well. I want to inform Long Islanders but also calm them down, and make them smile. ... I am excited about the political and a little more in-depth, meatier subjects, so there will be some hard news and some [explanatory] features.”

"Doug is a master reporter who has wowed generations of LIers with his ability to find the buried treasure in every story he encounters," Newsday owner Pat Dolan said in a statement. "He is a unique and beloved talent. We are thrilled to have him in the Newsday family."

In the interview, Geed said most of his work will be with NewsdayTV, the media group's streaming newscast that launched in March 2023. Geed said he also hopes to collaborate with other Newsday reporters for stories for its digital and print products.

Born and raised in Syosset, Geed, who has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, was an original hire at News 12 in 1986. Over the decades, Geed, along with his "Morning Edition" co-anchors Danielle Campbell (who left in 2023) and Carol Silva (who retired in 2019), became synonymous with some of News 12's most high-profile journalism. Among his biggest achievements was launching "The East End," a weekly program in 1997. He has won 10 New York Emmy Awards.

After leaving News 12 in March 2023, Geed said he had decided to retire and then kicked around the idea of a podcast in which he and his wife, Christine Geed, who is director of communications for the Town of Huntington, would visit different destinations on the Island or in the Hudson Valley.

"But I desperately missed news — I'm a journalist at heart,” Doug Geed said. "It's in my blood and I can never turn that off. It was time to jump back on TV."
